The Philippines and especially Manila looked fantastic through the 1960s and 1970s. It must have been a pleasure to see well dressed people and clean cars passing by and people looking like they were in the 1st world. After the end of the Marcos era there seemed to be a huge change in Manila and across the Philippines.
The streets look dirty and the cars give out huge throat hurting fumes, and even the dogs are unfriendly. Not really sure why so many negative things happened to the Philippines to make the Filipino not really care or contribute to their environment. From trash to posters everywhere to parked cars blocking the pavements and sidewalks.
But there is one thing that really makes me fume. The practice of many Filipinos to walk up to a wall or a tree and urinate. They have no shame in the fact that people passing by have to endure such primitive behavior. There is no shame when children or women walk past and no shame in any way if they are near food establishments or shopping malls.
Every man has in the past had to take an emergency leak. But , I am sure like the rest of you reading this it is very rare and it would require finding somewhere where you cannot be seen and would not cause offence to anyone else.
So why is that not the case in lots of places in the Philippines?
I remember many years ago doing some consulting work for a resort and I was in the serving area talking to staff and eating when one of the staff moved behind me and peed. I could actually smell the urine as I was eating my dinner. He did this in front of female waitresses and had no shame. He walked back and had no idea of how that was so offensive to me.
The amazing thing is that the toilet was only a few yards away and he had decided it was too far.
I reported his behaviour to the owner who said that’s the way it is in the Philippines. He told me he does the same and he now feels ashamed, but he would not take any action against the waiter, not even on grounds of hygiene. I decided I could not eat there. Imagine what was going on in the kitchen!
Shopping malls and Cr’s are everywhere and I still will never understand why the legitimate places to pee are ignored for a tree or corner. It makes no sense at all to most educated or self respecting people.
